We are so desperate for things to be either-or. For emotions to be neatly categorized, labeled, and stacked where they belong—one always winning out over the other. But life isn’t built like that. Life is contradiction.
You can be excited and afraid at the same time.
You can grieve what was while feeling immense relief that it’s over.
You can love someone deeply and still know you cannot stay.
You can want something with every fiber of your being and still resist it when it arrives.
But fear—fear demands center stage. It stomps its feet, rattles the walls, insists on its own importance. It tells you, you can’t possibly be both nervous and ready, you must choose one. And because fear often yells the loudest, we assume it must be true.
We wait until we feel only confident before we begin.
We wait until we feel only clear before we make a decision.
We wait until we feel only healed before we move forward.
We think we need certainty, but what we’re actually waiting for is permission—permission to move before we feel completely ready, before we have proof it will work out, before every last ounce of doubt has disappeared.
But waiting for an absence of doubt, fear, or discomfort is the fastest way to stay exactly where you are. Because the truth is, you will always be holding two things at once.
Some part of you will always be looking forward while another part hesitates.
Some part of you will always crave expansion while another part clings to what’s known.
This is not a sign that something is wrong. It’s a sign that something is moving.
A Lesson in Holding Both
I learned this in real-time recently.
My throat was in my chest, tight with angst and worry, while my heart beat in my hands—alive, buzzing, almost trembling with excitement. It felt like I was being ripped in two. My mind wanted to solve it, to pick a side, to make one of these feelings the true feeling. Surely, if I could just understand it, I could control it.
But instead of intellectualizing it away—like I usually do, like I want to do—I rode it. I let the honest truth of holding both be what guided me through the moment, instead of forcing one to mean more than the other.
And it was one of the most deeply human things I’ve ever let myself experience.
I came out on the other side, and somehow, the situation was better than I expected. Not because I controlled the outcome, but because I let myself stay present inside of it. I didn’t override what was real for me with a perfectly curated reaction. I didn’t try to play 4D chess with my own emotions, predicting every move before I let myself be in the moment.
Instead, I stayed with what was honest for me right then.
I stayed in my integrity, not in my analysis.
And I won’t pretend it was easy. I’m not good at this yet. But I’m practicing.
Choosing the Truth That Moves You
The work isn’t in erasing fear, it’s in learning to live with the paradox—
To let uncertainty exist alongside courage.
To let doubt walk beside desire.
To let the grief of what was sit next to the excitement of what could be.
Fear will always try to make itself the main character. It will try to convince you that it is the one worth listening to, that it is the one telling the truth. It’s persuasive like that.
But fear is not the whole truth.
It is a truth—one of many you are holding.
And you get to decide which one you build your life around.
Not the one that shouts the loudest.
Not the one that keeps you small.
But the one that opens the door to what you actually want.
Because the presence of fear does not mean the absence of readiness.
And the presence of doubt does not mean the absence of clarity.
It just means you're alive in the middle of something new.
And what a brave and beautiful thing that is.
to trying out the brave thing,

If this hit home, don’t keep it to yourself—send it to someone who needs this reminder too. Because the more we unlearn, the more we reclaim.
