The path isn’t straight. It never was. It’s uneven, narrow in places, sometimes so overgrown I have to push back branches just to find my footing. The air feels different—lighter but charged, like the seconds before a storm cracks open the sky.
I don’t know where I’m headed, and for once, I’m not gripping the map like it’s my lifeline. I’m walking slower now, feeling the damp earth shift beneath me, letting myself get lost on purpose.
A couple of weeks ago, I pulled The Star. A card that lands like a quiet inhale, like a whisper in the dark: You’re exactly where you need to be.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been striving. Pushing. Carrying the invisible weight of being responsible like a badge of honor I never asked to wear. I’ve been a diligent student of the “adulting” of life—dutifully showing up, playing the part, ticking off the boxes. I’ve built my goals like towers of brick and mortar, stacking them carefully, and responsibly, all while ignoring the ache creeping into my chest and the hollowness settling in my stomach.
But I’m not the type who’s stayed within conventional boundaries—not on the surface, anyway. I’ve uprooted my life, chased dreams across state lines, and traded a house for a van with four wheels and endless horizons. Most people see my life and call it brave. They marvel at the courage it must take to live so untethered, so free. And for a long time, their awe felt like enough. As long as the world believed I was pushing boundaries, I didn’t stop to ask myself if I actually was.
The truth is, what others called bold always felt comfortable to me. Easy, even. I’ve always been at home with the kind of risks that make people shake their heads or ask, “How do you do it?” Selling my belongings and chasing sunsets from a van? It felt like second nature. Letting go of what didn’t serve me, in the tangible sense, was never the challenge.
But the intangible things? The stories I tell myself, the limits I set on who I can be? Those boundaries are a different beast. Somewhere along the way, I realized that while I looked bold to the world, I was staying safely within the confines of my own comfort zone. The things I wasn’t brave enough to do weren’t out there—they were in here. In allowing myself to be fully seen, in showing up as more than a curated image of freedom and independence.
And that’s what The Star is nudging me toward: not the kind of boldness that’s easy for me, but the kind that feels vulnerable and raw. The kind that doesn’t just look brave but actually is.
I sit on the edge of my bed in the van, the back doors wide open to let in the salty breeze of the ocean. My coffee mug balances precariously on the self-made counter, and the morning light filters through the window, painting the walls in golden stripes. There’s no big, sweeping dance party here—just me, sitting cross-legged with the hum of the waves and the groan of my van settling into its resting place.
The ice-cold water still clings to my toes, a jolt of life from my earlier walk on the beach. The shore was quiet, except for the rhythmic crashing of waves, the occasional gull screeching overhead. There, barefoot in the freezing tide, I let myself feel small. Not in the diminished way I used to fear, but in the expansive way that reminds you how vast the world is.
It’s in these moments I feel the spark—the flicker of something bold, something alive. Not in what the world sees, but in what I’m learning to see in myself. In sitting still when everything inside me wants to rush to the next adventure. In making eye contact with a stranger and letting the conversation be messy, unpolished, unplanned.
I keep thinking about the boundaries I’ve lived within—not the external ones, but the ones I built inside myself. And I wonder… what if I let them soften?
What if I let go of the story I’ve told about who I am?
What if I stopped performing an idea of bravery and just let myself be?
The ocean tugs at the edges of my mind. Its waves crash and recede, crash and recede, a constant rhythm that mirrors the questions swirling in my head.
Who am I when I’m not trying to impress?
Who am I when I’m not proving something to someone?
I’ve been so busy living responsibly for others—meeting their expectations, following their rules—that I forgot what it means to be responsible to myself. To my dreams. To my joy. To my freedom.
Freedom, I’m learning, isn’t just selling everything you own or living untethered from a traditional life. That’s part of it, sure, but it’s also letting go of the need to take it all so damn seriously. It’s remembering that life isn’t an audition for some imaginary “do you have it together” show. Every interaction, every fleeting conversation with a stranger, is just that—a moment that doesn’t have to mean more than it does.
The Star reminds me that I don’t have to have all the answers. That the path will reveal itself as I walk it, uneven and overgrown as it may be. That my worth isn’t something I need to prove—it’s something I already carry within me, like a hidden light waiting to be uncovered.
And so, I’ll keep walking this path—stumbling, exploring, laughing, crying. I’ll let myself be seen, even when it feels vulnerable, even when it feels like too much. Because the spark is there, in the discomfort, in the play, in the letting go.
If you’re reading this, I hope you’ll come with me. I hope you’ll step off the well-worn path of seriousness and responsibility and into the wild, beautiful unknown. I hope you’ll let yourself play and dream and feel deeply, even when it’s messy. Especially when it’s messy.
Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: the spark you’re searching for isn’t lost. It’s just waiting for you to slow down, to notice it, and to let it catch fire in its own quiet, unruly way.
